Things to Do in Andaman

When you arrive in the Andaman Islands, what will you actually do? This is the complete guide β€” every water-activity destination, every experience, every island that's worth your time, written by the operators who run them.

The Andamans sit at the edge of the Indian Ocean. Soft white-sand beaches, calm-water lagoons, dense coral shelves, jungle-reclaimed colonial ruins, and dive sites that the rest of the world hasn't reached yet β€” all spread across a string of islands you reach by boat from Port Blair. This page walks you through where to go, what's at each place, and how to put it together into a day or a week.

We're Andaman Escapades β€” local, family-owned, 17+ years in the water. Five Reef Looker semi-submarines we own, two Wave Rider catamarans, the Sealink Dive Center at Havelock main market. Where we don't operate directly β€” at Neil, Chidiyatapu, the dinner cruises, game fishing, biolum kayaking β€” we coordinate through trusted partner operators. One contact, one accountable team, all the experiences in one place.

North Bay Island Β· Port Blair

πŸ“ 30 min by boat from Aberdeen Jetty, Port Blair
β˜… AEPL Flagship destination

The most accessible water-activities landing in the Andamans β€” 30 minutes by boat from Port Blair Aberdeen Jetty. Calm shallow water, dense coral patches near the surface, and the easiest combo day in the islands: stack four to five activities here without leaving the island. AEPL operates one Reef Looker semi-submarine on-site at North Bay. North Bay is also the only Andaman destination with concentrated partner power watersports β€” jet ski, banana boat, parasailing β€” all at the same lagoon. Scuba diving at North Bay is offered through AEPL's affiliated dive shops based in the Port Blair area. The standard Port Blair day combines Ross Island (heritage) with North Bay (water activities) on a single ferry circuit from Aberdeen Jetty.

⚠ Important: North Bay activities operate 9 AM – 3:30 PM only. The last boat back to Aberdeen Jetty leaves at 3:30 PM. Afternoon-only trips do not work β€” plan a morning or full half-day. Alternative: an afternoon road trip via Bamboo Flat β†’ Chunnabatta β†’ North Bay exists but the activities themselves close by 3:30 PM, so you arrive at a quiet island.

πŸ“ 15 min by speedboat from Havelock Jetty Β· No road access
β˜… AEPL Flagship destination

Havelock's premium water-activities landing β€” home to the largest concentration of our Reef Looker fleet (four of five vessels operate here) and the reef shelf often called the best in the Andamans (15–20 m visibility on calm days, large brain corals, dense fish populations). Reachable only by boat from Havelock Jetty (15 minutes) β€” no road access. Elephant Beach is a key dive site reached via Sealink Dive Center's Wave Rider Pro boat dives (Sealink itself is based at Havelock main market, not at Elephant Beach). Every major water activity except kayaking and power watersports operates here.

Havelock Open-Sea Dive Sites Β· For certified divers

πŸ“ Sealink Dive Center, Havelock main market Β· Wave Rider Pro departures
β˜… AEPL Flagship Β· Boat dive sites

Beyond Elephant Beach, Havelock's reputation as India's diving capital is built on its open-sea boat-dive sites β€” The Wall, Dixon's Pinnacle, Pilot Reef, The Aquarium, Lighthouse, Johnny's Gorge, Minerva's Delight. All these sites are reached via Wave Rider Pro (AEPL's owned dive catamaran) departing from Sealink Dive Center, located in Havelock main market. Sites are 18–30 m deep and require Open Water certification. Pelagic encounters include reef sharks, mantas (seasonal), schools of jacks and barracuda, and turtles year-round. Sealink offers a full range of scuba products from this single Havelock market base β€” shore dive, boat dive, early-morning dive, day-long dive + snorkel + Elephant Beach excursion combo, and the evening sunset cruise.

Neil Island Β· Shaheed Dweep

πŸ“ Neil Jetty (Shaheed Dweep)
Calmest destination

Neil Island (officially Shaheed Dweep) offers the calmest, least-crowded water experiences in the Andamans. Smaller crowds, gentler water, slower pace β€” ideal for nervous first-timers, families with small children, and elderly guests. Bharatpur Beach is the marquee snorkel site (shallow, no current, beginner-friendly with lifejacket) and Bharatpur lagoon offers the most beginner-friendly kayaking water in the Andamans. Glass-bottom boat operates here. Scuba diving at Neil is offered through AEPL's affiliated dive shops based on the island β€” calm-water sites suitable for DSD beginners and certified divers alike. Reef Looker semi-submarine and sea walking are NOT available at Neil β€” those are at North Bay (Port Blair) and Elephant Beach (Havelock) only.

Jolly Buoy Island Β· Marine National Park

πŸ“ Wandoor β†’ Jolly Buoy via Wave Rider catamaran
β˜… AEPL Flagship Β· Marine Park

Inside Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park β€” a 40-year-protected reef sector with the densest coral in the Andamans. Permit-controlled at 388 passengers/day, first-come-first-serve, β‚Ή850 + β‚Ή50 permit, Aadhaar-based registration. Closed during monsoon (Jun–Sep). AEPL operates the Wave Rider Jolly Buoy day trip from Wandoor Jetty β€” the only seamless way to combine catamaran transit, Marine Park permit, glass-bottom boat reef-viewing and semi-submarine all in one ticket.

⚠ Marine Park rules: NO snorkelling or swimming at Jolly Buoy. Only glass-bottom boat and semi-submarine reef-viewing are permitted inside the park boundary.

Wandoor is the gateway to Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park β€” a small coastal village south-west of Port Blair where the Wave Rider catamarans dock for Jolly Buoy departures. Beyond its role as the Jolly Buoy jetty, Wandoor hosts AEPL's Wave Rider Sunset Cruise β€” a 2.5-hour evening cruise on Wave Rider Pro in the protected Wandoor sector with golden-hour light, calm sea, refreshments. Charter services also operate from here for custom day cruises.

Chidiyatapu Β· Southern South Andaman

πŸ“ 30 km south of Port Blair
Sunset & nature

Chidiyatapu is the southernmost point of South Andaman β€” famous for its sunset point and white-bellied sea eagle population. Munda Pahad beach offers a quieter snorkelling site away from the North Bay/Elephant Beach crowds, with open-sea reef shelf and clean visibility. Scuba diving at Chidiyatapu is offered through AEPL's affiliated dive shops running boat dives in this sector. Some bioluminescent kayaking partners also run sessions from Chidiyatapu's protected creeks during dark-moon windows. Excellent for half-day combinations with Port Blair sightseeing.

Port Blair City Water Β· Flat Bay Β· Marina Park

πŸ“ Flat Bay Β· Marina Park Β· Aberdeen Jetty
City-based water

Port Blair city has its own portfolio of water experiences β€” the Flat Bay creek mangrove kayak (the most accessible mangrove paddle in the Andamans, no ferry required), the TSG Bella Bay Dinner Cruise from Marina Park area (partner-operated evening cruise with dinner), and charter services for private yachts and game-fishing departures. The city water option is ideal for guests on shorter trips, those without time to ferry to Havelock or Neil, or as the evening complement to a North Bay or Wandoor day.

Ross Island Β· Netaji Subhash Dweep

πŸ“ Aberdeen Jetty β†’ 30 min boat (paired with North Bay)
Heritage paired with North Bay

Ross Island (officially Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep) is the heritage half of the classic Port Blair half-day. 2 km off Port Blair's coast, 30 min boat ride from Aberdeen Jetty. Once the British administrative capital of the Andamans β€” nicknamed the "Paris of the East" before WWII destruction left it in ruins. Today you walk through jungle-reclaimed British-era ruins: the Chief Commissioner's residence, Anglican church, bakery, swimming pool, troops barracks, cemetery. The Light and Sound show narrates its history. Wildlife: spotted deer, peacocks, monkeys. Ross has no in-water activities β€” the value here is heritage walk, photography and the natural 90-minute stop on the standard Aberdeen β†’ Ross β†’ North Bay ferry circuit.

β˜† This is a heritage destination, not a water-activities site. Ross Island pairs naturally with North Bay water activities in a single half-day. We list it here because the standard Port Blair day-trip booking covers both islands on one ferry ticket.

No standard activities listed β€” custom itineraries on enquiry.

β˜† Plan a Day at Ross Island Sample half-day: 8:30 AM Aberdeen Jetty departure β†’ 9 AM arrive Ross Island β†’ 9–10:30 AM heritage walk + Anglican church + Commissioner's House ruins + cemetery + spotted deer + photo time β†’ 10:30 AM ferry to North Bay β†’ 11–3 PM water activities at North Bay (Reef Looker, sea walk, snorkel) β†’ 3:30 PM final ferry back to Aberdeen β†’ 4 PM at hotel.

Practical Information

Planning Your Water Activities

The essentials β€” best season to visit, how to book, permit requirements, safety standards.

Best Season for Water Activities in Andaman

The peak season runs October to mid-May. Calm sea, 15–25 m underwater visibility, stable weather. December to February delivers the calmest conditions and clearest water. Monsoon season (June to September) suspends most water activities β€” sea conditions are unsafe, visibility drops sharply, and the Marine Park (Jolly Buoy) is closed. Bioluminescent kayaking has its own seasonal window aligned with dark-moon nights from October to February.

Permits, ID & Documentation

Domestic Indian visitors: Aadhaar or other government photo ID accepted at all jetties. Foreign nationals: passport required. Jolly Buoy Marine Park permits are bundled inside the Wave Rider day-trip ticket β€” we handle the paperwork. Some Andaman destinations (Diglipur, Saddle Peak area) require Restricted Area Permits; not applicable to any of the destinations on this page. Scuba certification cards (PADI / SSI / NAUI) must be carried for certified fun dives at Sealink Dive Center.

Safety Standards

All AEPL vessels carry valid Mercantile Marine Department clearance. Life jackets are mandatory for every water activity except scuba diving (where buoyancy compensators replace jackets). Sealink Dive Center follows PADI safety standards β€” every dive is logged, briefed and equipment-checked. Medical declaration is required for sea walking, scuba diving and bioluminescent kayaking. Guests with severe cardiovascular conditions, recent surgery (especially ear/sinus), uncontrolled diabetes, severe asthma or pregnancy should consult us at booking β€” some activities may not be suitable.

⚠ North Bay closes by 3:30 PM: All water activities at North Bay Island operate 9 AM – 3:30 PM only. The last boat back to Aberdeen Jetty leaves at 3:30 PM. Afternoon-only North Bay trips are not workable β€” plan a morning or full half-day, ideally paired with Ross Island.
⚠ Jolly Buoy Marine Park rules: No snorkelling, no swimming, no chemical sunscreen, no plastic, no fishing. Only glass-bottom boat and semi-submarine reef-viewing are permitted inside the park boundary.
Common questions

FAQs Β· Water Activities in Andaman

Three activities are specifically designed for non-swimmers: Reef Looker semi-submarine (you stay completely dry inside the viewing cabin), glass bottom boat ride (sit on the deck, look through glass floor), and sea walking (helmet keeps your face dry while you walk on the seabed at 4–6 m). For surface-level water comfort, snorkelling at Bharatpur (Neil) with a life jacket is the gentlest entry into open water.
October to mid-May is peak season β€” calm sea, 15–25 m underwater visibility, stable weather, all activities operating. December to February delivers the calmest conditions and clearest water. Monsoon (June–September) suspends most water activities. Bioluminescent kayaking has its own seasonal window aligned with dark-moon nights from October to February.
At North Bay Island you can stack 4–5 activities in one morning (before 3:30 PM close): Reef Looker, sea walk, snorkel, glass-bottom boat, jet ski / banana / parasail. Pair with Ross Island heritage on the same ferry circuit. At Elephant Beach (Havelock) you can stack 3–4: scuba (Sealink Dive Center) + Reef Looker + snorkel + sea walk. At Neil Island, the calmer pace allows snorkel + glass-bottom boat + kayak at Bharatpur (no Reef Looker or sea walking at Neil). Combining destinations in one day is harder due to ferry timings β€” see our sample day plans above.
β˜… AEPL Flagship = vessels we own and operate directly (5 Reef Looker semi-submarines β€” 1 at North Bay, 4 at Elephant Beach; 2 Wave Rider catamarans; Sealink Dive Center PADI dive center at Havelock). AEPL Curated = activities we coordinate with vetted partner operators under our safety standards and accountability (sea walking, snorkelling, glass-bottom boat, kayaking at most sites). β—‡ AEPL Partner = standalone partner experiences booked through us as a single point of contact (jet ski, parasailing, dinner cruises, game fishing, bioluminescent kayaking).
Sealink Dive Center is based in Havelock main market β€” the only AEPL-owned scuba operation. Sealink is not located at Elephant Beach (though it dives there frequently). From the Havelock market base, Sealink runs five dive products: shore dive, boat dive via Wave Rider Pro to all Havelock dive sites (Elephant Beach reef, The Wall, Dixon's Pinnacle, Pilot Reef, etc.), early-morning dive, day-long dive + snorkel + Elephant Beach excursion combo, and evening sunset cruise on Wave Rider Pro. For scuba diving at Port Blair (North Bay area), Neil Island, and Chidiyatapu, AEPL coordinates through affiliated dive shops at those locations β€” same booking, same WhatsApp number, different operating partners.
Yes β€” via the Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) programme at Sealink Dive Center (Havelock main market). A certified instructor accompanies you one-on-one for a briefing at Sealink, then a guided boat dive via Wave Rider Pro to a shallow reef site (typically Elephant Beach area, 4–6 m depth). Age 10+. No prior experience required, no certification needed. This is the standard format for first-time divers. At Port Blair, Neil, and Chidiyatapu, DSD is also available through affiliated dive shops we coordinate at those locations.
The Wave Rider Jolly Buoy day trip includes Marine Park permit (β‚Ή850 entry + β‚Ή50 permit fee), Wave Rider catamaran crossing from Wandoor, and reef-viewing via glass bottom boat or semi-submarine inside the Park. NO snorkelling or swimming at Jolly Buoy (Marine Park rules). FCFS, 388 passengers/day, Aadhaar-based registration. Closed monsoon (Jun–Sep).
Jolly Buoy is inside the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park β€” a 40-year-protected reef sector where the Department of Forests & Wildlife restricts all in-water human contact to preserve the coral. Only glass-bottom boat and semi-submarine reef-viewing are permitted inside the park boundary. For snorkelling, the best alternatives are Elephant Beach (Havelock), Bharatpur (Neil) or Munda Pahad (Chidiyatapu).
Bioluminescent kayaking is a guided night paddle through waters where plankton glow blue-green when disturbed by your paddle. Every stroke leaves a faint trail of light; fish swimming under your kayak look like underwater fireworks. The biology is real plankton; visibility of the glow requires minimal moonlight. AEPL operates this via vetted partner operators during specific dark-moon windows from October to February. Tide and moon-phase dependent β€” dates confirmed at booking.
AEPL coordinates two partner dinner cruises: TSG Bella Bay Dinner Cruise (Port Blair, partner-operated) and the Semi-Submarine Dinner Cruise (Havelock, partner-operated). Both are bookable as standalone evening activities or as add-ons to a water-activities day plan. They are NOT AEPL-owned vessels but operate to standards we accept. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian options available; advance booking required.
Yes β€” we coordinate sport-fishing and charter bookings through vetted partners. Game fishing operates from Havelock, Neil, Chidiyatapu and Port Blair with target species including tuna, GT (giant trevally), mahi mahi, sailfish, wahoo and barracuda. Half-day and full-day trips available. Private charters include speed boats, catamarans and live-aboard yachts for custom itineraries, photography expeditions and group programmes. Both are enquiry-based β€” pricing depends on vessel, duration and group size.
Domestic Indian visitors: Aadhaar (or other government photo ID like driving license, voter ID, PAN) accepted at all jetties and activity sites. Foreign nationals: original passport required. Children: school ID or birth certificate. Jolly Buoy specifically requires Aadhaar for the Marine Park permit system. PADI / SSI / NAUI certification cards must be carried for certified scuba fun dives.
Reef Looker semi-submarine, glass bottom boat ride and Wave Rider: all ages welcome, infants on parent's lap. Sea walking, snorkelling and Discover Scuba Diving: minimum age 10. Kayaking: minimum age 12 (younger if accompanied by adult in tandem kayak). Game fishing and dinner cruises: no minimum age. Upper age limits are health-based rather than fixed β€” elderly guests in good health regularly enjoy our activities.
Reef Looker operates at two locations only: North Bay Island (Port Blair, 1 vessel) and Elephant Beach (Havelock, 4 vessels). Five vessels in total β€” it's AEPL's flagship water activity. Reef Looker does NOT operate at Neil Island, Jolly Buoy, Wandoor, Chidiyatapu or any other Andaman destination. If you want the Reef Looker experience, you go to North Bay or Elephant Beach.
Sea walking is available at two locations only: North Bay Island (Port Blair) and Elephant Beach (Havelock). It is not available at Neil Island, Jolly Buoy, or any other destination. Sea walking requires specific equipment and trained operators β€” these two sites are where the infrastructure exists.
All water activities at North Bay operate 9 AM – 3:30 PM only. The last boat back to Aberdeen Jetty leaves at 3:30 PM sharp. Afternoon-only North Bay trips are not workable β€” you'll arrive at an island with everything shut. Plan a morning departure (ideally 8:30 AM Aberdeen, paired with Ross Island for the standard half-day) or skip North Bay that day. An afternoon road trip via Bamboo Flat β†’ Chunnabatta β†’ North Bay by land exists for sightseeing only, but the water activities themselves will be closed.
Ross Island (officially Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep) is the heritage half of the classic Port Blair half-day. Once the British administrative capital of the Andamans, now jungle-reclaimed colonial ruins β€” Anglican church, Chief Commissioner's residence, bakery, troops barracks, cemetery, plus the Light and Sound show. Ross has no in-water activities β€” it's a heritage walk + photography stop. The standard day combines Aberdeen Jetty β†’ Ross (90 min heritage) β†’ North Bay (water activities) β†’ Aberdeen Jetty by 3:30 PM, all on one ferry ticket. This is the single most-booked Port Blair experience.
